Dorothy Crandall served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during WWII, and according to her obituary, served as a Navy Code Breaker working to decipher Japanese messages. [2] After the war, she worked at Sandia Base in Albuquerque as a stenographer and received an award for Sustained Superior Performance. She worked for the US Federal Government for 32 years.

Hargis Crandall was born in Maryville, Tennessee to Leon and Catherine (Hix) Hargis. She was married to Lt. Col. Frank W. Tester, USAF, and later to Paul H. Crandall, USAF.
