According to his service records, PFC Mermejo enlisted in the US Army on June 2, 1953. During the Korean War, he was assigned to the INF, Heavy Motor Co, 60th Inf Hvy Mortar Co. 112 Inf.1 The 112 Inf was constituted September 23, 1887 in the Pennsylvania National Guard as the 16th Infantry Regiment. In July, 1953, the 112 Inf was federally reorganized with its Headquarters at Erie.2 According to the Taos News, Mermejo was critically injured in a tractor accident. 3
